Popular comedian Charlie Berens has joined forces with grassroots organizations to launch a campaign opposing data center developments in Wisconsin. This past weekend, groups like Grass Roots Organizing Western Wisconsin (GROWW) and Chippewa Valley Indivisible hosted a free event in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, titled "Uniting West Wisconsin: A Regional Response to Data Centers," which featured food, music, and educational resources for residents.

Danny Akenson, a community organizer with GROWW, expressed significant concerns regarding the numerous hyperscale data center proposals throughout the state. The initiative gained momentum after the City of Menomonie placed a data center project on hold in September. Blaine Halverson, a key figure in the Menomonie opposition, helped bring the educational event to Eau Claire, emphasizing that the impacts of such developments extend beyond local jurisdictions.

Berens plans to use his platform to highlight the issue, advocating for transparency and accountability from tech companies. Organizers believe Wisconsin is being targeted for data center developments due to its abundant natural resources, water, cooler climate, and a perceived lack of regulatory oversight. Berens is also scheduled to host another community summit in Knapp, Wisconsin, indicating a continued statewide effort.
