Enid natives announce local data center, power generation project

Plainsmen Holdings, LLC, a partnership of four Enid natives, has announced Project Thunderbird, a significant data center and power infrastructure initiative spanning approximately 1,735 acres across four campuses in Enid, Oklahoma. The project includes plans for an on-site power generation facility capable of up to 3.3 gigawatts, intended to operate independently of the regional electric grid and contribute to energy reliability. Its proponents, including co-managing partner Chad Dillingham, highlight the project's potential for long-term economic growth, substantial tax revenue for Enid schools and services without increasing local utility rates, and a strengthening of the local tax base.

Before proceeding, Project Thunderbird requires vetting by the city of Enid and ultimate approval from the Enid City Commission, as stated by Mayor David Mason. The development aims to leverage Enid's strategic infrastructure and is positioned to support national security interests by providing secure, U.S.-based data center capabilities, particularly in relation to Vance Air Force Base's mandate for on-site backup power. Mike Cooper, military liaison for the city of Enid, emphasized the military's view of data centers and AI computing as strategic assets crucial for national defense.

Environmental considerations are also addressed, with plans to use raw water from the new Kaw Lake pipeline and advanced closed-loop cooling technology to minimize water consumption. Plainsmen Holdings, whose partners have deep roots in the Enid community, pledges transparency and responsible development, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal requirements while preserving the local quality of life.
