Mexico Planning and Zoning Commission Approves Proposed Data Center Regulations
The Mexico Planning and Zoning Commission approved amended ordinance language regulating data center development within the city. The proposal would limit data centers to industrial districts and address location, noise, utility usage and decommissioning, while the City Council’s 90-day moratorium remains in effect until late November.
Mexico’s Planning and Zoning Commission approved proposed ordinance language governing data center development within city limits. The rules would allow data centers only as an additional use in the I-1 Light Industrial and I-2 Heavy Industrial districts and would require applicants to address location, noise, utility usage and facility decommissioning.
Deputy City Manager Drew Williford said the commission amended the decommissioning bond provisions to focus on nuisance abatement and ongoing maintenance of abandoned facilities. The proposal is scheduled for presentation to the Mexico City Council in October, with expected council consideration in November, before the city’s 90-day moratorium on data center projects expires in late November.
