Socorro data center plans scrapped for now
Plans for a proposed 10,000-acre data center between Socorro and Magdalena, New Mexico, have been canceled. New Mexico Tech's president, Dr. Michael Jackson, cited too many unknowns and insufficient land as reasons for halting the project, which would have involved leasing land to Green Data. While currently scrapped, the university remains open to future discussions about the project.
Dr. Michael Jackson, president of New Mexico Tech, announced Tuesday that plans for a proposed data center in Socorro, New Mexico, have been canceled for the time being. The project, which would have encompassed 10,000 acres, including solar panels, between Socorro and Magdalena, faced significant uncertainties.
New Mexico Tech had considered leasing land to Green Data for the development. However, Dr. Jackson stated that the university lacked sufficient land for the ambitious proposal and cited numerous 'unknowns' associated with the project. Despite the current halt, New Mexico Tech expressed openness to revisiting discussions regarding the data center in the future.
