Springfield’s Planning and Zoning Commission will consider extending the city’s data center moratorium by 120 days and adding definitions for different types of data centers to the city code. The proposals will later go to the Springfield City Council, while an LLC linked to developer Trent Overhue is suing the city over the moratorium.

Springfield’s Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to consider a 120-day extension of the city’s data center moratorium, which is set to expire Nov. 17. Commissioners will also review proposed code definitions for accessory, micro and large-load data centers, including related generators, energy storage, cooling and electrical equipment, and substations.

The proposed definitions would not establish new development standards or determine where data centers may be built. The measures would move to the Springfield City Council for final consideration if recommended by the commission. The discussions follow repeated submissions and withdrawals of a potential data center proposal at 2900 S. National Avenue by developer Trent Overhue, whose affiliated LLC is suing the city over the moratorium.
