The Milwaukee Common Council approved a one-year ban on new data center development as the city considers zoning and other guidelines for future proposals. A central part of the discussion is defining what qualifies as a data center, including whether facilities containing servers at places such as businesses or City Hall should fall under the definition.

The planned rules are expected to address electricity demand, water consumption, noise, air quality, generators, emissions, public health and safety, environmental impacts and neighborhood compatibility. The discussion also emphasized giving residents clearer notice and a meaningful role before projects advance, while avoiding regulations so expansive that they prevent suitable data center development in appropriate locations.
