The Mandan Planning and Zoning Commission has recommended that the Mandan City Commission move forward with a proposed data center ordinance, but with significant changes. The decision followed over an hour of public comment, primarily focusing on residents' concerns regarding noise pollution, water consumption, and the proximity of the proposed data center to residential areas and schools.
One resident specifically noted the site's location less than a mile from Mandan Middle School and Mandan High School, emphasizing potential impacts on children and families from noise and construction traffic. While some residents expressed opposition, others supported the project, arguing for its potential as a sign of progress in an area already accustomed to large-scale developments. The Planning and Zoning members ultimately voted unanimously to recommend approval of the ordinance, but only after incorporating six amendments, which include stricter noise limits, enhanced monitoring protocols, and a mandate for PFAS-free coolants. The amended ordinance will now proceed to the Mandan City Commission for further consideration.
