More than 100 residents filled Belvidere City Hall on Tuesday night to protest a potential data center development by DataWatt Energy. The proposed project, referred to as "Project Hawkeye," is described by DataWatt Energy as a three-gigawatt hyperscale facility with a 500-megawatt fuel cell.
Residents, including Marie and Michael Novak who live near the proposed site along Genoa Road, expressed deep concerns that the data center would negatively impact their land, quality of life, and the rural character of the community. They fear significant strain on water and power resources, increased noise, and a mass exodus of residents if the project proceeds.
Belvidere Mayor Clint Morris acknowledged that discussions between the city and DataWatt Energy are in their early stages. He emphasized that the city requires more information before making any decision on whether the project is suitable for Belvidere. Morris also stated that the developer has agreed to cover any city engineering, environmental, or legal review costs if needed, and assured residents that he would not support any development not in the best interest of the community.
