NScale and Fidelis Energy are moving forward with plans to construct an AI data center, dubbed the Monarch Campus, on more than 2,000 acres in Mason County, West Virginia. This project is projected to launch in 2027 and create at least 700 permanent jobs, with Delegate Jim Butler expressing hope for up to 2,000 positions that are expected to be high-paying.
The companies emphasize that the data center will operate on a microgrid system to prevent additional strain on the existing power grid and avoid increasing electricity costs for local ratepayers. State leaders view this as a strategic opportunity to utilize the 16 gigawatts of power generated annually within the state, much of which is currently exported.
Environmental concerns, particularly regarding sound and water usage, are being addressed. NScale states that new data centers are significantly more efficient, utilizing advanced technology to minimize impact. They confirm a closed-loop cooling system to minimize municipal water use, ensuring very little water consumption.
