The Metropolitan Area Planning Commission, at a recent meeting documented by the Wichita Documenters program, elected Bob Aldrich as Chair and Tony Zimbelman as Vice Chair. The Board of Zoning Appeals approved several consent items and final plats, but deferred certain requests, including one by Benjamin Rosas to vacate platted street right-of-way, due to opposition from neighbors Sharon Wright and Connie Johnson regarding access and utility concerns. Another conditional use request for an accessory apartment was also deferred pending documentation. The commission approved a request presented by Philip Zevenbergen to rezone a county property from Rural Residential to Single-Family Residential for a 12-lot development, despite neighbor concerns about water and traffic. Separately, proposed amendments to the Uniform Zoning Code, introduced by senior planner Moumita Kundu to ensure tenants are notified of zoning changes, were approved 7-0 for the City of Wichita. Principle Planner Justin Constantino also presented staff recommendations to amend the Comprehensive Plan's Land Use Compatibility section, which the Planning Commission approved 8-0. These approved amendments to the Uniform Zoning Code and Comprehensive Plan will now move to the City Council and the Sedgwick County Board of County Commissioners for final consideration. Planning Director Scott Wadle concluded the meeting by announcing upcoming county town halls and listening sessions specifically concerning data centers, and encouraged commissioners to participate in a poll to schedule a special meeting in April to discuss data centers.
