Concerns from unions over proposed Chesapeake data center's withdrawal

East Point Energy has withdrawn its proposed Millstone Energy Center project in Chesapeake, Virginia. This decision came as a shock to local unions, including IBW Local 80, the Laborers Union, and the Operating Engineers Union, who had already signed contracts to provide hundreds of workers for the project. Dennis Floyd, business manager for IBU Local Union 80, expressed disappointment, stating that the withdrawal forces workers to seek jobs further from home, despite the project offering good opportunities closer to home.

East Point Energy stated their decision was made in an effort to continue sharing information and answering community questions. While community members had previously raised concerns, new concerns are now coming from the unions regarding the economic impact. Floyd confirmed that their agreement with East Point Energy would remain in place through the withdrawal, preserving contracts if the project were to move forward in the future.

Separately, the Chesapeake City Council unanimously decided to implement an 8-month hold on making any decisions concerning data centers. The council indicated they might revisit data center conversations only if a comprehensive plan amendment is passed by council members.
