The Urbana City Council has initiated a process to potentially restrict data center development within the city. During a recent meeting, a motion was unanimously passed to begin repealing a zoning ordinance that currently allows data centers as a permitted use in M1 (light industrial) zones. This particular provision concerns properties located south of the Champaign County Administration Building along U.S. Route 68 and Ohio Route 55. City Law Director Mark Feinstein has been tasked with drafting the necessary documents for the repeal, which will be presented at an upcoming council meeting. Following council review, the proposal will be forwarded to the Urbana City Planning Commission for its consideration and action. Feinstein explained that the repeal process will follow procedural steps similar to those used for adopting zoning ordinances, requiring collaboration between the City Council and the Planning Commission. In a related effort, the Council also discussed a newly established subcommittee dedicated to studying the potential impacts and benefits of data center development in Urbana. The subcommittee's mission is to conduct a fact-based study and recommend measurable standards that any future data center project in the city must meet, thereby providing the Council with a solid factual foundation for its future decisions. The next City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5th, where further progress on the zoning ordinance repeal and subcommittee findings are expected.
