Report: Iowa data center boom carries billions in economic impact
A Common Sense Institute report says data center investment in Iowa could reach $53 billion by 2031, more than tripling the state’s capacity and supporting nearly 29,600 jobs. Linn County is a major hub, with QTS and Google projects under development in Cedar Rapids and another Google facility proposed in Palo, while the growth is expected to significantly increase electricity demand.
A Common Sense Institute study estimates that companies have invested about $15 billion in Iowa data centers and announced an additional $38 billion in projects through 2031. The expansion could more than triple the state’s data center capacity and support nearly 29,600 jobs, including construction, transportation, retail and electrical work.
Linn County accounts for roughly one-third of Iowa’s data center capacity. QTS and Google are developing facilities in Cedar Rapids, while Google has proposed another data center in Palo. Analysts caution that existing and planned facilities could consume nearly half of Iowa’s average 2024 electricity capacity, prompting utilities to plan new natural-gas generation and battery storage.
