A proposed 550,000-square-foot data center, dubbed 'Project Swan,' is facing significant community opposition in Lakeland, Florida. The planned facility, located at Old Tampa Highway and Wilkinson Road, would consist of three buildings, stormwater infrastructure, and an electric substation. Residents are primarily concerned about potential noise pollution, excessive water and energy consumption, and overall environmental impact, including the local swan population.

During a recent city commission meeting, residents vocalized their disapproval, despite the project not being on the official agenda. Engineering consultant Kimley-Horn, the applicant, has not yet disclosed detailed information regarding the project's electric and water demands, traffic requirements, or site access.

Brian Rewis, director of community and economic development for the city of Lakeland, acknowledged the public's concerns but emphasized the city's obligation to respect the rights of both the landowners and the applicant. He stated that the city is still months away from public hearings and a commission decision, should Kimley-Horn proceed with the necessary applications.

An upcoming, non-public meeting between the developer and the city's development review team is scheduled for June 3. FOX 13 has sought comment from Kimley-Horn regarding the project.
