Gov: Peru City Council, La Salle County, Illinois State Legislature
Peru, Illinois city officials are signaling a willingness to consider data center developments, opting for a case-by-case evaluation rather than imposing a blanket moratorium. This decision comes after discussions within the city's committee of the whole, where Alderman Tom Payton initially voiced opposition due to concerns over energy and water consumption, but later decided to withhold judgment pending further due diligence.
A poll of Peru City Council members revealed no support for a moratorium or outright prohibition on data centers. Aldermen Jeff Ballard, Rick O’Sadnick, and Andy Moreno emphasized the need to assess each project individually, considering potential economic benefits like tax revenues for infrastructure projects, as well as specific details about energy and water systems. Mayor Ken Kolowski also highlighted the need for more information, particularly regarding potential regulatory oversight from Springfield (the state capital) and La Salle County, noting that both the county and the state are reportedly developing regulations. State Senator Sue Rezin is actively involved in this legislative effort.
Other aldermen, including Bob Tieman, Jim Lukosus, Jason Edgcomb, and Mike Sapienza, echoed the sentiment of needing more information and due diligence before making definitive decisions. They stressed the importance of evaluating each proposal on its merits, weighing community benefits against potential drawbacks, and avoiding a rigid stance that could deter beneficial opportunities.
