State Rep. Presses TCEQ and Data Center Company Over Development

State Representative Drew Darby (R–San Angelo) has formally requested that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) convene a public meeting in Tom Green County. The meeting is intended to address four pending air quality permit applications submitted by Westline TX Holdings, LLC, for a proposed Beacon Data Centers campus. Rep. Darby noted significant worry among affected residents, expressing his own shared concerns following numerous constituent meetings and communications.

In a separate communication, Rep. Darby challenged Beacon Data Centers directly regarding perceived lack of transparency and communication with the local community. He enumerated residents' anxieties, including the proposed project's resource usage, water sourcing for cooling, potential economic benefits, and impacts on traffic, noise, and grid stability. Darby emphasized the importance of community respect in rural West Texas, stating that Beacon Data Centers is "far behind where it needs to be in terms of community support."

This local pressure aligns with broader statewide concerns. In June, Governor Greg Abbott directed the Public Utility Commission of Texas and ERCOT to implement measures protecting residential ratepayers from data center expansion costs. Governor Abbott has also advocated for new standards addressing water consumption, neighborhood impacts, and infrastructure expenses, which Rep. Darby urged Beacon Data Centers to publicly commit to. Polling data suggests widespread Texan concern across the political spectrum about the strain these energy-intensive projects could place on the state's power and water infrastructure.
