Cleveland City Council Set to Extend Data Center Moratorium to Early 2027
Cleveland City Council has introduced legislation to extend the city’s existing data center moratorium from October 20 to January 29, 2027. The proposal will be reviewed by the Finance Committee before moving to the full council, as officials continue developing rules addressing zoning, power grid impacts and water usage.
Cleveland City Council legislation would extend the city’s current pause on new data center development until Jan. 29, 2027. The moratorium, which was set to expire Oct. 20, remains in effect while the council considers additional policies and regulations.
The council’s Data Center Working Group, led by Ward 13 Councilman Brian Kazy, reviewed data center rules in other communities and held three town halls with residents. Kazy said residents are seeking clearer regulation covering zoning, electricity demand and water use. The extension will go to the council’s Finance Committee next week and then to the full council, with further legislation expected by the end of January.
