The Skagit County City Council and Skagit County have both enacted six-month moratoriums on data center development, pausing all new permit applications. This decision follows significant public concern regarding the impact of data centers on local resources. Residents expressed worries about the substantial land and power usage, and particularly the large amount of water required to cool these facilities, which they believe should be prioritized for farmland and citizens within Skagit County.
Although Skagit County leaders have yet to receive any specific proposals for data centers, the preventative measures reflect a broader trend of public opposition. A recent Gallup survey indicated that 71% of Americans are against new data center construction in their communities, citing concerns over electricity costs, environmental impact, and water consumption. The report also noted that permitting delays, labor and chip shortages, and power supply issues, coupled with pushback from local governments—such as Seattle's one-year moratorium—are contributing to a slowdown in data center construction nationwide.
