NY GOP lawmakers push NYPA for details on data center energy discounts
New York Republican lawmakers are asking the New York Power Authority to disclose the size of energy discounts provided to data centers through its ReCharge program. The request comes amid concerns about energy costs, grid reliability and the state’s one-year moratorium on large-scale data centers.
New York Assembly Republicans, including Minority Leader Ed Ra and Energy Committee ranking member Scott Ray, have asked New York Power Authority President and CEO Justin Driscoll to provide more information about discounted power agreements awarded to data centers under the ReCharge program. NYPA has declined to disclose the rates, citing proprietary customer information, but said it will respond after reviewing the lawmakers’ letter.
The USA TODAY Network previously reported that five data centers statewide, including three in Rockland County, received ReCharge discounts. The inquiry follows Gov. Kathy Hochul’s order for a one-year moratorium on large-scale data centers and her consideration of measures to end tax incentives for such facilities. The issue has also entered the governor’s race, with Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman criticizing the moratorium.
