The Lee County Board of Supervisors in Iowa is expected to vote on a resolution to enact a moratorium on new data center construction for up to one year. This pause is intended to allow the county to develop a comprehensive regulatory framework for data centers, addressing concerns over their demands on public infrastructure, water, and electricity.

The Lee County Board of Supervisors in Iowa is scheduled to vote on a resolution proposing a moratorium on new data center construction for a period of up to one year. This measure, discussed since May, aims to establish a clear and predictable regulatory framework for data center siting and operations within the county.

The proposed moratorium would apply to both large and small-scale data centers, as well as high-density facilities. Supervisors highlighted the current lack of countywide zoning ordinances to regulate such developments and expressed concerns about data centers' substantial long-term demands on public infrastructure, including electrical power, water supply, transportation, and emergency services, as well as potential environmental impacts.

During a recent work session, supervisors, including District 4 Supervisor Garry Seyb and District 3 Supervisor Chuck Holmes, discussed the need for more research and information to determine suitable ordinances. Seyb acknowledged the financial incentives for landowners to lease or sell land to data center companies, but emphasized the county's responsibility to protect the common good.

Lee County's proximity to the Mississippi River, offering a plentiful water source, along with the lack of current zoning, could make it an attractive location for data centers. Neighboring Des Moines and Henry counties have already enacted similar moratoriums. The Board intends to consult with Lee County Engineer Ben Hull and Lee County Attorney Ross Braden to address legal issues and infrastructure concerns before drafting any new data center ordinances.
