
Power grids reach tipping point as 100-degree weather, data center boom stress aging networks

Extreme heatwaves across the U.S. are pushing electricity grids to their limits, exacerbated by the soaring power demands of data centers and the artificial intelligence sector. This "new normal" sees seasonal weather extremes coinciding with increased industrial and residential electricity consumption, straining decades-old transmission infrastructure. Regional Transmission Operators (RTOs) such as the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) and the Southwest Power Pool have issued emergency alerts across more than half of U.S. states.
PJM Interconnection LLC, serving 67 million people from Chicago to Washington, D.C., has experienced particularly intense strain, with demand soaring to an unprecedented 168 gigawatts on July 2nd. This region includes Virginia’s Data Center Alley, a significant hub for AI facilities. Despite PJM's historical reliability, the grid's stability is being tested by severe, though not historically extreme, weather conditions, leading to deep concerns about its capacity for future growth. PJM even sought and received U.S. Energy Department permission for data centers to deploy backup generators.
While some grids, like Texas's Electric Reliability Council of Texas (Ercot), have added substantial renewable generation and managed to avoid emergencies, others are struggling. Experts like Timothy Fox of ClearView Energy Partners LLC and Peter Lake, the outgoing senior director of power at the White House’s National Energy Dominance Council, warn that PJM's situation is projected to worsen, with capacity auctions coming up short. The grid plans an emergency auction to ensure data centers pay for their required generation, but infrastructure improvements will take years and billions in investment.
