State Sen. Sue Rezin has proposed an Illinois bill requiring data centers to make payments through community benefits agreements. The revenue would create a local fund that could be rebated to taxpayers through their property taxes.

Rezin said the measure could help communities retain local control over major development decisions, including whether to approve data center projects. The bill is expected to come before lawmakers during the next veto session, and the report said there had been no public opposition. Gov. JB Pritzker has separately called for data center regulations.
