Franklin County, Missouri, is currently considering two new data center proposals, the "Beltline Energy project" and the "Gateway Digital Campus proposal." These projects have sparked significant public outcry, with 174 residents testifying for over 10 hours during a recent Planning and Zoning Commission meeting. Residents like Patricia Schuba of the Franklin County Rural Coalition and Chuck Redeker expressed strong concerns about potential negative impacts, including decreased property values, increased utility bills from Ameren, noise pollution, loss of night sky, health risks from exhaust, and the discharge of chemicals into the Meramec River, affecting ecology, wildlife, and local water sources. Mary Fuller, a Catawissa resident, cited a University of Michigan study highlighting issues like increased utility rates, high resource consumption, and the prolongation of fossil fuel energy plants associated with data centers. Developers presented their proposals, emphasizing billions in economic gain and addressing concerns regarding noise and infrastructure. However, the Planning Director, Nicole Zielke, confirmed the public hearing is closed, and the Commission will now review the extensive public input. The Franklin County Planning and Zoning Commission is set to discuss the proposed rezoning on April 21, where they may decide to table the matter for more time or provide a recommendation to the County Commission.
