Mystery noise reported across multiple US states

A mysterious, low-frequency humming noise is disrupting daily life for residents in several US states, including New Jersey, Virginia, and Connecticut. Many describe the sound as constant and unsettling, loud enough to interfere with sleep and peace of mind. In Vineland, New Jersey, locals suspect the noise began with the construction of a 2.5 million square-foot data center developed by Data One. Resident Scott Montgomery, who lives half a mile from the site, expressed concerns about the noise, stating it's 'infringing on our peace of mind and our tranquility' and questioning how loud it will be once the facility is fully operational. The Cumberland County Department of Health has received reports and stated it will take enforcement action if noise levels exceed code limits. Data One, the developer, maintains that its site operates 'in full compliance with Vineland City noise ordinance limits' and is deploying sound reduction measures. Experts suggest that data centers, particularly their cooling systems, fans, and chillers, can produce constant low-frequency hums ranging from 55 to 85 decibels. Similar complaints have emerged elsewhere, with authorities yet to identify a clear source. In West Haven, Connecticut, residents have launched a petition, gathering around 140 signatures, to address a comparable 'constant or intermittent humming noise and low-frequency vibrations' that causes stress, anxiety, and sleep disruption.
