Vote for data center plan in Franklin County
The Franklin County Planning and Zoning Commission is set to consider recommendations for two data center projects in Pacific and Villa Ridge. Residents have voiced strong opposition, citing environmental concerns and the unsuitability of industrial facilities on farmland. Community members are pushing for a county-wide vote on the issue rather than a decision by commissioners.
The Franklin County Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to review recommendations concerning the development of two data centers. The proposals involve sites at the Beltline development in Crooked Creek, Pacific, and Diamond Farms in Villa Ridge. This meeting follows previous lengthy sessions where numerous residents expressed significant opposition to the projects.
Community members have consistently raised concerns about the potential environmental impact of these industrial-scale facilities on local ecosystems and their proposed locations on farmland. During a recent meeting, which extended for nearly 11 hours due to unregulated public comment, residents criticized county commissioners for appearing disengaged.
Opponents argue that the decision, which they characterize as an "80/20 issue" representing a large majority's sentiment, should not be made by only three commissioners. They are advocating for the matter to be put to a county-wide vote to allow broader public input. The upcoming planning and zoning meeting, where these recommendations will be discussed, is set for 7:00 p.m. at Union High School.
