La Crosse, Wisconsin's Judiciary and Administration Committee has advanced a proposal for an 18-month moratorium on new data center development within the city. The committee voted unanimously to recommend the moratorium, which would prevent the city from issuing permits for new data centers while officials conduct studies on their environmental, economic, and health impacts.
This initiative follows a similar 18-month moratorium already approved by La Crosse County. Although the county's moratorium did not automatically apply to developments within city limits, La Crosse city officials intend to participate in the county's established committee dedicated to studying data center impacts. This collaborative approach aims to ensure a comprehensive understanding before the city makes any final decisions regarding future data center projects.
The city's Common Council is slated to cast the final vote on this measure on August 13th.
