Charlotte leaders are set to consider extending the city’s pause on new data center development until next October. The debate centers on a proposed Hood Road project in east Charlotte, where nearby resident Ulyses Guard says a data center would be incompatible with the neighborhood and could create noise and utility demands. Guard said he has even discussed moving if the project advances.

American Tower previously told WSOC-TV that the project would use closed-loop cooling and produce noise comparable to office buildings. The proposal’s rezoning hearing remains pending; approval would allow up to 40,000 square feet of office, data storage and telecommunications space. Union electrician Jessica Wilson and organizer Melissa Reyes support the construction jobs but also called for stronger protections for residents and communities.
