Indonesia is emerging as a significant data center hub in Southeast Asia, with its digital economy and AI adoption fueling rapid industry expansion. Microsoft is investing $1.7 billion to build a major regional hub in Karawang International Industrial City, West Java, with plans for multiple facilities totaling hundreds of megawatts. The Indonesian government views data centers as a priority for attracting investment and is considering dedicated regulations, incentives, and a streamlined investment climate. Digital Edge operates two data centers in Jakarta, with its newest facility, Edge 2, being the largest in the capital. The company is also developing its largest commitment to date, the CGK campus in Bicassi, West Java, designed for 500 megawatts. Digital Edge is urging authorities to designate more data center clusters as Special Economic Zones (SEZ) to offer incentives and streamline permitting processes. Real estate firm JLL notes that while land is available in greater Jakarta, demand is increasing, and operators must consider community impact. Developers are ensuring compliance with local and national regulations to avoid disturbing communities. The ambition to become a regional hub hinges on these data center corridors powering the economy and driving Southeast Asia's growth.
